The south coast, from a hotel on it

Sri Lanka’s south coast, properly explained

We live at Kabalana, on the stretch of coast these guides describe. Everything here — the drive times, the seasons, the prices, which operators keep their distance from a whale — is what we would tell a friend, not what reads well in a brochure.

The south coast at a glance

Sri Lanka's south coast runs roughly 120km from Galle to Tangalle along a single, slow coast road — about three hours end to end. Galle has the colonial history, Ahangama and Midigama the reef breaks, Mirissa the whale boats, and the stretch east of Matara the space.

The season is December to April. The southwest monsoon makes May to September wet, with rough seas and most beaches unsafe to swim; October and November are an unpredictable, much cheaper shoulder. Surf season and whale season both sit inside the December-to-April window.

Budget travellers manage on roughly 25–35 USD a day; mid-range with a good hotel and a day trip or two runs closer to 80–150. A rice and curry at a local place is 400–800 LKR.
